A water sofener removes hardness by a process called ion-exchange. This process removes the hardness from the water and discharges it to the drain replacing it with sodium or potassium. Fake softeners, characterized by no salt, no drain hookup or control valve, do not remove hardness. They reduce the scaling in your water heater and pipes but you still have all the same cleaning problems.
